Holmes and the Penny Dreadfuls: Gothic Chapbooks

Friday 8th November
11.50-12.15

Before the rise of the Gothic novel, the Chapbook was a common form of literature. For a penny or a halfpenny, members of the public had access to a wealth of information and stories of adventure and morality. This talk examines the wonderful repository of folklore, story, and fantastical happening that is the Victorian Gothic pamphlet of Holme’s London and which may have fed into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories.
